The weekend of October 25-26 was unforgettable as Thelma Harris Art Gallery hosted Unveiling Ancient East Africa: Echoes of Contemporary Art, a powerful two-day celebration of East African artistry. The exhibition showcased the incredible works of Nebay Abraha, Tesfalem Atenaw, and Robel Solomon Teweldemedhin, capturing the attention of art enthusiasts eager to experience a harmonious blend of tradition and modern expression.

Friday’s art reception was filled with excitement and admiration. Esteemed guests Joyce Gordon and Thelma Harris graced the event, their presence symbolizing the dedication and vision that have long nurtured the Oakland art community. Joyce’s contributions, creating a vibrant platform for local talent, and Thelma’s more than three decades of showcasing both rising and celebrated African American artists, highlighted the powerful legacy they continue to build for future generations.

A special moment of the evening was when Wosene (Worke Kosrof), a Smithsonian-recognized artist, spoke with deep admiration about the featured works. Wosene shared insightful thoughts on their art, emphasizing how their pieces captured the essence of East African culture with a modern voice. His engaging reflections, paired with his own exploration of Fidel, the ancient Ethiopian script, left the audience captivated, showcasing how symbols could connect past and present in profound ways.

The Art Talk on Saturday, led by the event’s organizer Lydia Haile, was a heartfelt gathering that fostered deeper appreciation and discussion. Lydia’s presentation radiated warmth and enthusiasm, drawing attendees into the stories behind the art and inspiring thoughtful conversation. The session reinforced the shared bonds among the attendees, revealing art’s unique ability to connect across time and place.

This celebration of culture and creativity left a lasting impact on everyone present. Attendees left feeling inspired, enriched, and eager to explore more.
